Silicon Valley Backed Plan to Provide Free Broadband Service Pending at the FCC for Nearly One Year

- Swift Action Required to Grant M2Z's License Application and Maximize Direct Benefits to Consumers-

MENLO PARK, Calif., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) must take swift action to grant M2Z Networks, Inc.'s (M2Z) pending license application in order to avoid an irrecoverable loss of consumer benefits, according to a study released today.

In May 2006, M2Z filed an application to lease currently underutilized spectrum to build a fast, free, family-friendly wireless broadband network that would provide Internet access to 95% of Americans within 10 years.  In return, M2Z would contribute 5% of revenues from an enhanced service to the U.S. Treasury and allow public safety to use its interoperable network for free and on a priority basis during emergencies.

Washington, DC (March 1, 2007) One of the key issues concerning commercial wireless broadband providers is how the FCC will control the unused television channels' "white space" to unlicensed use for broadband and wireless innovation (FCC Docket 04-186).

The Wireless Internet Service Providers Association, as well as Part-15.Org, both leading representatives of the industry, have joined forces in agreement to refute claims made by the television broadcast industry that unlicensed devices operating in unused TV channels would interfere with TV reception and other licensed uses of the TV band; and second, whether the TV white space spectrum should be exclusively licensed instead of unlicensed.

Frontline Launches Plan For More First Responder Spectrum

WASHINGTON and GREENSBORO, N.C., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Frontline Wireless, LLC today announced that it is filing at the FCC a breakthrough proposal meeting Chairman Kevin Martin's call for a market-based approach to providing a national public safety network. To reach these goals, Frontline intends to create an open access, wholesale broadband 4G network serving both public safety users and carriers. Frontline has begun assembling a bidding group for acquiring the necessary spectrum in the upcoming commercial auction of the 700 MHz band.

Frontline's FCC plan provides: (1) Significantly more spectrum for first responders and the ability to use commercial airwaves on a priority basis when needed; (2) Free buildout of a hardened, robust 4G network; (3) Maximum equipment choice with the use of open network standards; (4) Local control for local agency networks; and, (5) Nationwide interoperability among all networks. The plan would not require statutory changes or cause delays to the 700 MHz auction.

Kerry Introduces Wireless Innovation Act to Spur New Broadband Connections

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator John Kerry (D-MA) last night introduced the Wireless Innovation Act of 2007, to make broadband available to unconnected communities by exploiting unused frequencies in the broadcast spectrum known as “white spaces.” Kerry introduced the same bill in the 109th Congress, but it was not acted on by the full Senate.

In the spirit of the President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal “Rural Electrification” package, which expanded access to electricity for thousands of American families, Kerry’s bill would serve communities large and small, enabling the delivery of broadband that will connect business owners with their customers, students with dynamic new learning resources and first responders with victims in crisis.
